Privacy
Code Specimen privacy policy
In short: Code Specimen has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, and it sends nothing to its developer. What it reads from a page stays in your browser, unless you choose to send one element to your own AI provider with the optional Tailwind feature.
What Code Specimen reads, and when
Code Specimen only reads a web page after you open it on that page, by clicking its toolbar icon or pressing its keyboard shortcut. It then reads the page's fonts, colours, spacing, CSS and images so it can show them to you in Chrome's side panel or Firefox's sidebar. It does this inside your browser, and it stops when you close the panel. Nothing it reads is saved or sent anywhere.
What Code Specimen stores
Your settings (theme, units, root font size, colour format and copy mode) are saved in your browser's local extension storage on this computer, so they survive a restart. They are never synced or sent anywhere. You can remove them by removing Code Specimen from your browser.
Network requests
Code Specimen makes no network requests of its own. Requests happen only as a direct result of something you click:
- Downloading an image or a zip of images reads those files from the website that serves them, exactly as the page itself could.
- "Find on Google Fonts" and "Open image in new tab" open those addresses in a new tab.
- The optional Tailwind feature sends only the HTML and CSS of the element you chose, and only when you press Generate. It goes to the provider you picked in Settings (Anthropic, OpenAI or Google Gemini), using your own API key, and Code Specimen shows exactly what will be sent before you send it. Your key is stored only on this computer and is never sent anywhere except to that provider, as part of the request. That provider's own privacy policy covers what it does with the request, and any charge for it is on your account with them. In Firefox, Firefox also asks your permission the first time you press Generate, and nothing is sent unless you allow it.
Code Specimen's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements, and with Mozilla's add-on policies.
Permissions, and why Code Specimen needs them
Code Specimen never asks for access to all websites, not even as an option. It can read a page only after you click its icon or press its shortcut on that page.
activeTabandscripting: to read the page you open Code Specimen on, only after you ask.sidePanel(Chrome only): to show Code Specimen beside the page. Firefox's sidebar needs no permission.storage: to keep your settings on this computer.
Test builds
Copies of Code Specimen downloaded from the testers page of its website (/testers/), rather than from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons, are marked "Test build" in the panel. Those copies share anonymous usage counts and error reports with the developer, so problems can be fixed before release: a random install ID, which features were used, the Code Specimen and Chrome versions and your operating system. Test builds exist for Chrome only. They never send page addresses, page content or anything you copy. Copies from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons send none of this.
This website
This website uses no cookies, no analytics and no advertising, and it loads nothing from other companies: its fonts and images are served from the site itself. It is hosted on Cloudflare, which handles each request so the page can reach you.
The home page sends you to your browser's own store rather than offering a download of its own. If you do download a copy of Code Specimen from this website, the site records that one download happened and when. It records nothing else about it: no IP address, no country, no cookie and nothing about your browser, so the count cannot say who downloaded it. Downloads of the test build from the testers page are counted too, and those also record the country Cloudflare reads from the request.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new date, and the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons listings will link to it.
